Caught a repeat of This American Life this afternoon, recorded entirely on an aircraft carrier in the Arabian Sea in 2002. There’s a lot of fascinating material here, but I was struck most by a segment where the pilots were being interviewed about what it actually felt like to be flying over Afghanistan, dropping bombs. One young man came across as the perfect soldier – quite convinced, and quite chilling.
Unfortunately, the archived version is streaming only, so I can’t give you a link to the exact section, but if you have some time, the stream is here. It’s worth your time.
